In Modern Art, players compete to gain the most money by buying and selling paintings at auctions and reselling them for profit. All players take turns running the auctions, which come in many different styles. Whoever offers the top bid owns the painting and sells it at the end of the round. The price the painting fetches is based on the popularity of the artist and how well his paintings have sold in the past. The player with the most money at the end of four rounds of buying and selling wins.

Modern Art is one of Knizia's best auction games, and almost certainly the most intellectual. Players sell paintings using one of five available auction types, and each auction not only results in the exchange of money and the building of indivdual collections, but also affects the ultimate end value of all paintings sold. Players able to juggle multiple variables in their head will likely come out victorious, as well as those who know how to drive a mean auction. A good choice for those looking for hard-core strategy with a short playing time.
